Stone Fireplace Calgary

Fireplace surrounds, refacing and feature walls

We build stone fireplaces across Calgary: floor-to-ceiling ledgestone or stacked stone, mantel-height surrounds, brick veneer, large-format porcelain and the feature wall to match. A dated brick fireplace gets refaced straight over the existing brick, with no demolition of the firebox. An indoor fireplace is year-round work, so winter is a good time to book it. 5-year written warranty, same-day written quotes for most Calgary addresses.

Interior Stone

What We Build

Three kinds of fireplace job, one crew. Which one you need comes down to what is on the wall today and how much of it you want to keep.

Floor-To-Ceiling Fireplaces

A new fireplace or chimney breast in ledgestone, stacked stone, brick veneer or full-bed stone, floor to ceiling, with the mantel, hearth and built-ins planned in before the first stone goes on.

Refacing An Existing Fireplace

Tired brick or tile covered straight over the sound existing surface after a scratch coat. The firebox and the insert stay where they are. The look changes completely.

Tile Surrounds And Feature Walls

Large-format porcelain around an insert, and stone accent walls in living rooms, entries, basements and bar fronts, in the same stone lines we install outside.

New Fireplaces

Floor-To-Ceiling Stone And Brick

A floor-to-ceiling fireplace is built the way our exterior stone is built, scaled for a living room: metal lath over the framing, a scratch coat, then the stone or brick veneer set in the manufacturer's mortar. Veneer runs under 15 pounds a square foot, so it goes on standard framing with no structural work. Full-bed natural stone is a different weight class and needs a footing or a steel angle to carry it. We tell you which your wall can take at the site visit.

The two fireplaces here are brick, one charcoal and one whitewashed, each with a solid wood mantel let into the face and built-in shelving on both sides. We keep the required non-combustible zone around the opening, build to the insert's listed clearances, and leave the face ready for the gas fitter and the finish carpenter.

Most fireplaces take 3 to 5 days of stone work and a plain feature wall 2 to 4, plus the mortar cure before the mantel goes on.

Large-Format Porcelain

Tile Fireplace Surrounds

Porcelain is the other way to finish a fireplace: marble-look panels, big tiles with hairline joints, a flat clean face that suits a linear insert. The fireplace here is large-format marble-look porcelain around a gas insert, with built-ins either side.

Large-format tile only looks right when it is dead flat, so every tile gets a mechanical levelling clip while it sets. The insert's clearances are kept exactly as they would be for stone, and the face is left ready for the trim kit and the mantel.

Porcelain is also a quick way to reface an old surround. A flat and sound surround can take new porcelain over it after prep, and old brick gets a scratch coat first so the tile has a flat base.

Makeovers

Refacing A Dated Brick Fireplace

Calgary is full of 1980s and 90s brick and tile surrounds that are perfectly sound and badly dated. Refacing keeps the firebox and the insert where they are and changes everything you can see.

What Stays

The firebox, the insert, the flue and the chimney breast. Nothing is demolished. If the existing brick is sound it becomes the base for the new face; if it is loose or spalling we repair it first.

What Goes On

A scratch coat over the old brick to flatten it, lath where the new face needs it, then ledgestone, stacked stone, brick veneer or large-format porcelain set in the manufacturer's mortar, not construction adhesive.

What You Decide

Mantel or no mantel. A hearth in matching stone or a contrasting slab. Whether the stone stops at the mantel or runs to the ceiling. Where the TV goes, so the blocking and the wiring go in before the stone does.

Send us a photo of the fireplace and the rough wall size, by text to 403-700-8415 or with the form above, and we will tell you what the wall can take and what the job involves.

Interior Stone

Stone Feature Walls

The stone that goes on a fireplace goes on any interior wall: an entry, the wall behind a bed or a television, a basement bar front, a reception wall in an office. The wall here is stacked ledgestone in a front entry, finished tight to the baseboard and the ceiling with no trim to hide the edges.

Veneer this light goes on standard framing over lath and a scratch coat, so nothing structural changes. Cutting is done outside or in a tented zone with a vacuum saw, the floors are covered before the first box is opened, and a wall this size is two to four days of work.

How It Runs

From Photo To Finished Fireplace

  1. 01

    Photo or visit

Text a photo of the wall or fireplace and its rough size. For most jobs we come out, check what the wall can carry, measure, and talk through stone, mantel, hearth and where the TV goes.

  2. 02

    Written quote

Stone, scope and price in writing. Same day for most Calgary addresses.

  3. 03

    Protect and prep

Floors and furniture covered. Lath and a scratch coat on new framing, or a scratch coat over the old brick on a refacing. Blocking for the mantel and the TV goes in now, with the insert's clearances marked on the wall.

  4. 04

    Set the stone

Corners first, then the field, in the manufacturer's mortar. Cuts are made outside or in a tented zone with a vacuum saw. The mortar cures before the mantel goes on.

  5. 05

    Finish and walk-through

Joints grouted or left dry-stacked as the stone calls for, the face cleaned, sealer where the stone needs it, the room cleaned up. We walk it with you, warranty in writing.

Interior stone is year-round work. Exterior stone waits for spring, so winter is the easy time to get a fireplace or feature wall booked.

STONE FIREPLACE FAQ

What Calgary homeowners ask first.

Yes. Sound brick gets a scratch coat to flatten it, then the stone goes on in the manufacturer's mortar. The firebox and the insert stay where they are and nothing is demolished. If the brick is loose or spalling we repair it before the new face goes on.

It is quoted in writing after a free visit. The price moves with the stone (cultured, natural thin veneer or full-bed), the height (to the mantel or to the ceiling), what is on the wall today (new framing, sound brick, or a surround that needs repair first) and the extras: hearth, mantel, built-ins and TV wiring. Send a photo and the wall size and we will tell you what the job involves before anyone comes out.

Cultured stone is the usual answer indoors: it is light enough for standard framing, it is rated for fireplace surrounds, and it comes in consistent shapes and colours. Natural thin veneer gives you real stone at a similar weight. Full-bed natural stone is the heaviest and the most expensive and needs a footing or a steel angle to carry it. Any of the three can run floor to ceiling.

A mantel-height surround usually takes 3 to 5 days and a feature wall 2 to 4, plus the mortar cure before the mantel goes on. A floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a hearth and built-ins sits at the top of that range. You get the timeline with the quote.

Yes, if it is planned before the stone goes on. We put solid blocking and a cable chase in the wall first and mark where the bracket lands, so it bolts into wood rather than into veneer. The insert's manual sets how far above the opening a TV can sit, and the blocking goes to that height. Mounting into finished stone later can be done, but it is a harder and messier job.

Stone and brick mantels and hearths are our work, in matching stone or a contrasting slab. A wood mantel or beam usually comes from your carpenter or your millwork supplier; we put the blocking in for it and set the stone so it lets in cleanly.

No. The insert, the gas line and the venting are a licensed gas fitter's work, and a wood-burning fireplace needs a WETT inspection, which we refer out. We build the surround to the insert's listed clearances, keep the non-combustible zone around the opening, and leave the face finished and ready for the trim kit.

Yes. Interior stone has no temperature limit, so fireplaces and feature walls are year-round work and winter is a good time to book them. Exterior stone waits for above 5°C.

Every fireplace and feature wall carries our 5-year written workmanship warranty, in writing with the quote.
